In the Dominican Republic, many children with disabilities face serious barriers to healthcare, therapy, and education—especially families living in poverty. According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 children in the country lives with some form of disability, yet many still lack access to inclusive education and specialized care.
Lucely, a two-year-old girl from the community served by NPH, is one example of this reality. Due to her disability, she has very limited mobility and is unable to do many things independently. For her mother, caring for a child with complex needs often meant facing uncertainty and difficult decisions with little support or guidance.
Like many families of children with disabilities, Lucely’s family faced significant challenges in accessing specialized healthcare and information. Without the necessary support systems, parents are often left to navigate their child’s condition alone.
The Impact of Family-Centered Support
Through NPH’s Disability and Inclusion Program, Lucely and her mother have become part of a supportive community dedicated to improving their quality of life. NPH coordinates medical consultations, follow-up appointments, and specialized treatment while providing practical guidance to Lucely’s mother.
Therapists work closely with the family, teaching her mother how to safely carry, position, and stimulate Lucely at home to support her development and overall wellbeing. This ongoing support helps the family better understand Lucely’s needs and equips them with the tools to care for her with confidence.
While Lucely’s condition cannot be cured, the support she receives is helping her achieve the best possible quality of life. Equally important, her mother has gained knowledge, confidence, and hope for the future.
