Haiti

Our Story

Founded in 1987, NPH Haiti (Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs) was established to provide children in need with a safe home, education, care, and the support of a family. Inspired by the vision of NPH founder Father William B. Wasson, the organization grew to respond to the changing needs of children and families across Haiti. Alongside Father Wasson, Father Rick Frechette, a Passionist priest, played an important role in developing NPH Haiti’s work, particularly its response to the urgent healthcare needs facing children. As those needs became increasingly apparent, healthcare became a major part of NPH Haiti’s mission. Father Rick pursued a medical degree, and what began as a small hospice eventually developed into St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, which opened its purpose-built hospital in Tabarre in 2006.

Following the devastating 2010 earthquake, NPH expanded its support further, including through the Father Wasson Angels of Light initiative for displaced children and the continued development of education, rehabilitation, and disability services. Today, NPH Haiti’s work is based primarily in Tabarre and is organized across three main areas: Programmes de Vie (Life Programs), providing care, education, and support for children and young people; St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, providing specialized pediatric and maternal healthcare; and Special Needs Programs, providing specialized care, therapy, rehabilitation, and support for children and adults with disabilities. Together, these three areas enable NPH Haiti to respond to a wide range of needs while continuing its long-standing commitment to children, young people, families, and communities in Haiti.

Our Core Areas of Focus

Family and Community Strengthening

In Tabarre, NPH Haiti provides safe, caring, family-like living environments for children and young people at the St. Louis Home and Father Wasson Angels of Light. Dedicated caregivers provide everyday care, stability, and support, creating environments where children and young people can feel safe, build relationships, and grow and develop.

Education

At the Father Wasson Angels of Light School in Tabarre, NPH Haiti provides education from nursery through high school for children and young people living in NPH residential care, as well as more than 600 students from surrounding communities. The school provides a safe and supportive learning environment, extending access to education beyond NPH’s residential services and giving children and young people from the wider community opportunities to learn and develop.

Health and Wellness

On-site health services at NPH Haiti’s residential facilities in Tabarre provide children and young people with primary healthcare and ongoing medical support. Nutritious meals and psychosocial support complement this care, supporting their physical and emotional well-being. NPH Haiti is also home to St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, one of the country’s leading pediatric healthcare facilities, providing specialized medical care for children as well as maternal health services. Disabilities and Inclusion

NPH Haiti’s Special Needs Programmes support children and adults living with disabilities through three connected services: Kay Christine, a residential home offering lifelong care; Kay Ste. Germaine, a rehabilitation center providing therapy and recovery services; and Kay Gabriel, a center for special education and outpatient therapy. Family support, nutrition, and vocational activities help prevent abandonment and promote dignity, independence, and inclusion.

Youth and Economic Empowerment

Through the Don Bosco program in Tabarre, NPH Haiti supports young people who grew up in its homes as they pursue high school, university, or technical training, helping them build skills, confidence, and a path toward independent adult life.

Haiti is home to approximately 11.8 million people and remains the poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Approximately 2.8 million children in Haiti need humanitarian assistance, and more than 741,000 children have been displaced by violence.

Nearly one in two Haitians lives on less than $3.00 a day, and more than half of the population faces high levels of acute food insecurity.

Nearly 1.5 million children and teachers need education support, and school closures during the 2024–2025 school year deprived more than 243,000 children of learning.

The Difference You Make

Growing Brighter Futures

Anabelle has grown up at NPH Haiti since she was a baby, spending her school years in Kenscoff from kindergarten through ninth grade before moving to an NPH home in Tabarre to finish her classical studies. During a year of service at Kay Ste. Germaine, working with children with reduced mobility, a mentor encouraged her to consider occupational therapy. With the support of her NPH godparents, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy at a university in Léogane, the only one in Haiti offering the program.

Today, Anabelle works as a therapist and clinical supervisor at a therapy clinic in Léogane, where she treats patients recovering from strokes and fractures and guides students through their internships. In a country with few rehabilitation professionals, she chose to stay in Haiti to serve her community. She hopes to continue her studies abroad and one day open an occupational therapy workshop that helps patients live more independently. Grateful to the godparents who made her education possible, she now supports other young women in the NPH family who are facing financial difficulty.
