With deep sorrow, we bid farewell to Father Philip C. Cleary, a truly exceptional person whose life embodied love, dedication, and selfless service. For decades, Father Phil, affectionately known as Padre Felipe, devoted himself to the children and young people of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), providing them not only with a home, but also with hope and purpose.

Father Phil, the second of seven siblings, grew up in Chicago, where he was recognized for his academic achievements. His path of service began as a young seminarian, counseling at a Chicago orphanage and serving as a dorm director at a home for troubled youth. He graduated from Loyola University and the Archdiocesan seminary with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in theology.

Ordained in 1979, Father Phil first served in two Chicago parishes. He was elected President of the Association of Priests and later joined the Board of Directors of the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. During this time, he learned about NPH and the mission of Father William B. Wasson. Initially planning to volunteer for one summer at NPH’s main home, Father Phil quickly felt called to stay beyond his three-month term, embarking on what became a lifelong commitment to the children of NPH.

Father Phil served for many years as National Director of NPH Mexico before becoming Executive Director of NPH International. He resided at NPH’s main home in Miacatlán, Morelos, Mexico, where he dedicated his life to the organization’s mission and the children he so dearly loved.

In recognition of his dedication, he was awarded the Mercy Mission Award by Chicago priests for Outstanding Work with Troubled Youth and the Community Service Award from the mayor of Cuernavaca, Mexico.

More than just a spiritual guide, Father Phil was a source of strength and a father figure to countless children and youth. His compassion and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His words of encouragement and life wisdom will continue to inspire all who were touched by his kindness.

Those who had the honor of knowing Father Phil understand the profound loss his passing brings, but they also carry forward his legacy of love and hope. Let us honor his memory by supporting and caring for our pequeños as he did—with open hearts.

Rest in peace, Father Phil. Your light shines on in the hearts of the pequeños you cherished, and your legacy will continue to inspire the entire NPH family for generations to come.
