Guatemala

Our Story

NPH Guatemala has been serving children and families for more than 30 years as part of the international NPH network, founded in 1954 by Father William B. Wasson. What began with a single act of compassion has grown into a mission that has transformed the lives of more than 20,000 children and young people across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, NPH Guatemala supports 619 children, young people, adults, and individuals with disabilities through programs that strengthen families and create opportunities for long-term success. Its work focuses on five key areas: family strengthening, health and well-being, education and development, disability and inclusion, and youth and economic empowerment, helping vulnerable communities build brighter futures.

Our Core Areas of Focus

Family and Community Strengthening

NPH Guatemala works with children and families towards safe family reintegration, providing psychosocial and educational support to strengthen relationships and help families prepare to live together again. When children are temporarily unable to live safely with their families, Casa San Andrés, close to the community of Parramos, provides a safe, caring, family-like living environment with support from dedicated caregivers and a multidisciplinary team.

NPH also works with families in the wider community through the William Wasson Community Family Center in Chimaltenango, providing services and activities that strengthen families and help children grow up safely within their families whenever possible.

Education

The NPH Education Center, located at Casa San Andrés, provides education from preschool through ninth grade for children and young people in NPH residential care as well as those from surrounding communities. Education is complemented by tutoring and scholarships that support young people as they continue into secondary and university studies. NPH also provides daily childcare for young children, helping working parents and caregivers access safe, reliable care while supporting children’s early development.

Health and Well-being

The on-site medical clinic at Casa San Andrés provides healthcare for children and young people in NPH residential care as well as those from surrounding communities. Services include general medical consultations, nursing, dental care, rehabilitation, and pharmacy support. Professional psychological counseling complements these services, supporting the emotional and mental well-being of children and young people.

Disabilities and Inclusion

NPH Guatemala supports children, young people, and adults with disabilities through residential care, practical life-skills development, therapy, and rehabilitation. At Hogar Sagrado Corazón, situated at Casa San Andres, people with disabilities receive specialized residential care and support adapted to their individual needs. Through Inclusión y Vida Práctica, young people develop practical skills for everyday life and greater independence. Support also extends into the wider community. At the William Wasson Community Family Center in Chimaltenango, children with disabilities can access free therapy and rehabilitation services, helping families access specialized support close to where they live.

Youth and Economic Empowerment

NPH Guatemala prepares young people for independent adulthood through vocational workshops in sewing, cooking, baking, carpentry, and metalwork. Empowerment groups such as Chicas Poderosas and Hombres de Honor help young people develop confidence, socio-emotional skills, and leadership. NPH also supports the transition into employment, connecting young people with internships and job opportunities through partnerships with local businesses.

The Difference You Make

Every Step Toward Independence

Enzo is a curious and energetic five-year-old whose determination shines despite the challenges of living with spastic cerebral palsy. Raised by his mother in the face of financial hardship, he lacked access to the specialized care he needed during his early years. Since joining NPH Guatemala’s Disability and Inclusion Program in 2024, Enzo has been receiving physical and occupational therapy twice a week, helping him build strength, mobility, and confidence.

Today, Enzo can stand for longer periods with support, eat solid foods, drink independently, and participate more actively in everyday life. Just as importantly, he has become happier, more social, and excited about the future. Supported by his mother’s unwavering dedication and NPH’s family-centered approach, Enzo now dreams of going to school, becoming a police officer, and building a bright future filled with opportunity.
