This is an orthodontic project for the beneficiaries of the various programs of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Bolivia.
The project “Drawing Smiles” by NPH Bolivia began in 2019 and is a multi-year orthodontic initiative. It is currently in its third year of implementation, and around 26 adolescents have already been treated.
“Drawing Smiles” arose from a need. Beyond the physical discomfort that crooked or misaligned teeth can cause, they can also affect emotional well-being. The project’s goal is to provide healthy smiles, correct dental issues, and improve the self-esteem of young adolescents.
The average number of beneficiaries each year is 13. In the first year, some were not very enthusiastic. “We know that when it comes to health, everyone gets scared; they think they will be injected. There was uncertainty, but we explained it well, and they accepted,” says Health Coordinator Verónica Rivera. “Now, they are the ones asking, ‘When is it my turn?’ They see the results, and they have really been good,” she concludes.
“I feel completely fine; I like my smile. I have very good self-esteem, and yes, that’s also because I wore braces. I feel handsome and charming; I think my smile contributes to that,” said Maynor*, one of the beneficiaries who has already completed his treatment.
According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Health of Bolivia (2017), “85% of the Bolivian population has some dental problem.” Additionally, access to orthodontic or specialized treatments is costly. Verónica, along with Dr. Daniel (the dentist), is preparing for the next year of the project, hoping to include beneficiaries from the community, achieving a greater impact and expanding the philosophy of our founder, Father William Wasson: “Love does not divide; it multiplies.”
