Christmas at NPH Guatemala is a time of celebration, unity, and traditions that reflect the rich Guatemalan culture. Through various activities and events, the children and families of NPH engage in festivities that not only bring joy but also strengthen community ties.

General Celebrations

At NPH Guatemala, Christmas is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The main tradition is the Christmas Eve dinner on December 24th, where everyone waits until midnight to share a family feast. The star dish is the tamal, accompanied by fruit punch. During the wait, children play with fireworks to stay awake. After dinner, it is common to exchange hugs and gifts among family and friends, and many attend the general mass in honor of Christmas.

The Christmas posadas are a significant tradition celebrated from December 15th to 24th. These small processions recreate the journey of Mary and Joseph, with a prayer and reflection station held each day. Additionally, many families buy new clothes or shoes for the occasion.

Children eagerly anticipate several activities during this season, such as “Christmas gatherings,” where businesses and families organize sports mornings, snacks, and piñatas to share festive moments leading up to Christmas.

Cultural Festivities

Cultural festivities at NPH Guatemala include traditions such as the creation of the nativity scene, where children actively participate. Although Christmas songs are mainly sung during the posadas, these activities reinforce the sense of community and culture among the children.

Special Foods and Dishes

Food is a central element in Christmas celebrations. Corn tamales are prepared, which are a mixture of corn dough with tomato sauce and meat (chicken, beef, or pork), wrapped in banana leaves and cooked for several hours. The  fruit punch, a hot beverage that includes pineapple, papaya, coconut, and other fruits with spices like cinnamon and clove, is also a favorite.

Although children do not participate directly in preparing these meals for safety reasons, they help with simple tasks at home.

Decorations and Environment

Christmas decorations are fundamental at NPH Guatemala. In addition to the traditional Christmas tree, homes are adorned with lights and large red flowers known as pascuas, which are emblematic of the season. Children enjoy contributing to home decoration, especially when decorating the tree.

Community Inclusion

NPH Guatemala promotes the inclusion of children and families from the community during celebrations. Some families request permission from the Family Court to take their children home for one or two weeks to spend the holidays together. Those who cannot go home participate in festivities organized by NPH.

During this time, a special event called “La Posada Navideña” is organized, expecting around 200 participants. This event includes a walk recreating Mary and Joseph’s journey, reflections on Christmas, artistic activities, games, and a community dinner.

Support and Outreach

NPH also provides support to community members during Christmas through community service performed by children from the Shelter and Protection Program. These activities include visits to nursing homes and community kitchens throughout the year.

The San José Family Center shares fruit baskets with participants and individuals identified as being in difficult situations within the community. This approach ensures that those who need it most receive assistance during the holidays.

Memorable Moments

A memorable moment was a Posada organized by the San José Family Center, where an inclusive atmosphere was created for all attendees. A special area was set up to care for children with severe disabilities while their mothers enjoyed the event. This celebration promoted a sense of community and acceptance, allowing everyone to participate freely.

Reflections and Hopes

Christmas celebrations reflect NPH’s core values: love, security, and inclusion. The Posada Navideña is more than just a celebration; it is a space to strengthen bonds between families and community leaders.

As we approach 2025, there are hopes of continuing to strengthen local families and communities. The goal is to foster active participation where families are not just beneficiaries but protagonists in building a supportive environment. Projects like a Christmas market could empower families by allowing them to sell typical products while supporting community initiatives.

In summary, Christmas at NPH Guatemala is a celebration rich in traditions that unites children, families, and communities under a shared festive spirit of solidarity.
