Some of the fundamental pillars within the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) family are unconditional love and security, which foster an environment where children can grow up happy and aspire to a future in which they can serve and help others. Learn about Rubí’s testimony* and the preparation that has led her to be a successful young woman.
My name is Rubí*, I am 22 years old, and I am happy to be able to tell you a little about my life being part of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos El Salvador family.
I came home when I was only 4 years old, along with my brother and sister, who are now 23 and 21 years old, respectively.
I remember that, during my early years, we lived with my father who played the role of mother. But unfortunately, many times he could not give us what was necessary for our well-being; so, it was our older sister (19 years old at the time) who was responsible for the home. However, one day my father got sick and could no longer take care of us, and it was from there that my sister made the difficult decision to ask for foster care for me and my siblings.
Thanks to the support of different institutions, we finally arrived at NPH.
At first it was quite strange; walk through the door to live in such a large family, especially since we never grew up close to our mother, and I remember feeling quite alone, because I missed my father so much. But little by little we adapted to living together and I managed to feel calm and loved in my new family.
My childhood at NPH was happy, I had the opportunity to receive education for the first time and, although at first, I felt that studying was not my thing, I began to understand the importance of it in my life and discovered that my favorite subjects were English and Calligraphy.
I also enjoyed having friends my age, with whom I could share joys and sorrows; and with whom I have special memories, like when we learned to read and always read a story before bed.
I was happy to have the affection of so many people, and I especially remember that of my third-grade teacher, who always showered me with advice, affection, and kind words, as if she were a mother.
Thanks to NPH I was able to count on unconditional love and support, and I learned to value and be grateful for everything they give us to become better people every day; helping each other, as brothers and sisters, putting into practice the pillars that Father Wasson left us to continue his legacy and achieve great success.
Today I am a third-year student of the “Nursing Technician” career. My interest in this profession was born when I was little, when I saw people who needed help in different ways, and that motivated me to strive to improve those living conditions.
I think that this career requires a lot of vocation, love, service, responsibility and teamwork; and beyond the difficulties that one imagines on a day-to-day basis, it is incredible to be able to connect with people, listen to their stories and get to know them beyond their pain or suffering.
Nursing is a career with which I will always feel identified and for which I will fight to give the best of myself, because it is impossible to walk the corridors of a hospital and not do everything in my power to save the lives of those people.
Along this path, I have faced different obstacles and one of those that has resonated the most for me was when I had to face the outside world and discovered that, sometimes, there can be people who do not believe or do not trust in your potential. But I have always motivated myself and, with the help of God and the people who have supported me since I was little, I have learned not to give up until I achieve my goal.
In the future I would like to be able to travel and see more places, help more people and be able to lend my knowledge to a clinic.
I thank all the benefactors of NPH for their generosity and willingness to help people who, like me, have gone through or are going through crisis situations and need opportunities to move forward.
I feel blessed and fortunate to be part of this great family and to continue to succeed every day.
