In 2005, a little girl named Lise arrived at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos y Hermanas (NPH). She was just ten years old — fragile, uncertain, but full of unspoken dreams. Having lost both parents at an early age, she faced a life of instability and hardship. Her family, overwhelmed by poverty, could no longer provide for her. Yet, within the walls of NPH, Lise found not only a safe home but a new family — one that believed in her potential even before she did.
At Ste Hélène, an NPH home, Lise discovered a world where love, discipline, and learning walked hand in hand with the help of tios and tias, and it was there that her dream began to take shape. Surrounded by educators, “Tios” and “Tias,” and a community rooted in compassion, she learned the value of perseverance and the meaning of responsibility.
“I chose medicine,” she recalls, “because I’ve always wanted to help others and relieve their suffering. Growing up at NPH showed me how essential health and solidarity are. I wanted to give back what I had received.”
That determination carried her through years of study at Université Notre-Dame d’Haïti thanks to NPH, where she recently earned her medical degree. Her journey was not without struggle — long nights of study, moments of doubt, and the financial challenges that often shadow students in Haiti. But NPH was never far. They were there every step of the way, providing not just financial support, but emotional and moral encouragement.
“Their support wasn’t only material,” she says. “They stood by me, reminded me that giving up wasn’t an option.”
Today, Dr. Lise stands as one of the living examples of what NPH means to so many: hope made real. Her success is not only her own — it’s a shared victory for every caregiver, educator, donor, and staff member who contributes to the mission of transforming lives.
As she prepares to complete her mandatory year of community service, Dr. Lise dreams of specializing further in medicine and helping improve access to healthcare across Haiti.
“I want to guide others as I was guided,” she says. “My greatest wish is to pass on the same love and belief that shaped my life.”
Her journey — from a little girl in need of care to a doctor ready to care for others — reminds us all that when we invest in a child, we invest in a nation’s future.
Through NPH, a lost dream became a life dedicated to healing.
